🚨 #PSBLACKOUT BEGINS 🚨
Here’s another reason I believe Sony moving away from physical games could be a massive long-term mistake for themselves.
PLAYSTATION ISN’T JUST REMOVING DISCS. THEY RISK REMOVING THEMSELVES FROM THE NEXT GENERATION’S FIELD OF VIEW.
Think back to being a kid.
How many of us walked into Walmart, GameStop, Target, Best Buy, or another store and immediately headed toward the video game section?
You saw walls of games.
You picked up cases and looked at the artwork.
You read the back of games you’d never heard of.
You begged your parents for one.
Sometimes there was a console kiosk where you could actually play a demo.
That was marketing.
We didn’t call it marketing because we were kids.
But PlayStation was being put directly in front of us.
Now imagine slowly removing that physical presence. A child walking through a store doesn’t browse a digital PlayStation Store sitting on Sony’s servers.
They can’t stumble across a digital game case on a shelf.
They can’t pick it up.
They can’t flip it over.
They can’t discover PlayStation’s digital storefront unless they’re already inside the PlayStation ecosystem.
And that’s the part of this decision I think is incredibly shortsighted.
Physical games aren’t only products. They’re advertisements.
Every PS5 case sitting on a Walmart or GameStop shelf says:
PLAYSTATION EXISTS.
Every new release creates another opportunity for someone walking by to notice the brand.
Retail shelves put PlayStation in front of existing customers AND potential customers.
A digital storefront primarily markets to people who have already entered your ecosystem.
Think about how strange the alternative sounds:
Imagine having to buy admission to a car dealership before you’re allowed to walk around and see what cars they sell.
That’s backwards.
Great marketing reduces the barrier to discovering your product.
It doesn’t put the discovery behind ownership of the product.
And this isn’t just nostalgia.
It’s about the next generation.
Those kids walking through stores today are tomorrow’s customers, collectors, developers, creators, and PlayStation fans.
Sony should want PlayStation EVERYWHERE they look.
On shelves.
In stores.
In displays.
In their friends’ hands.
Online AND offline.
Digital gaming can grow without physical gaming having to disappear.
Give consumers both. Give us the choice.
Because when you remove your products from physical shelves, you aren’t only removing plastic cases.
You’re giving up physical advertising space for the PlayStation brand.
And eventually, somebody else gets that space.
💿 Physical games create visibility.
👀 Visibility creates discovery.

❤️ New players create the next generation of PlayStation.
DON’T ERASE YOURSELF FROM THE SHELF.
⏳ LESS THAN 12 HOURS.
