Community Open Floor: What Does the Future of Physical Gaming Look Like?

🎮 “I DON'T BUY PHYSICAL GAMES, SO WHY SHOULD I CARE?”

I've seen this argument a lot.

And my answer is simple:

—Because this isn't only about YOU—

Maybe you buy everything digitally.

Maybe you've never sold a game.

Maybe you don't care about trade-ins.

That's completely fine.

But what about the gamer who DOES?

Think 10, 20, even 30 years ahead.

You buy a PS5 today. Eventually the PS6 comes along. Are you really going to keep every console, controller and game you've ever purchased forever?!

You aren't going to sell your PS5 or trade it in?! Thats the cost of digital, there is no trade in, but with physical:

People sell old consoles.

People trade games in.

People give games to friends and family.

People buy used games because they can't afford $70 releases.

People sell their old collection to help pay for the next generation.

Physical games have value AFTER the original purchase.

Buy a $70 physical game and, depending on demand, you may later be able to sell it, trade it, lend it or give it away.

Buy a $70 digital game and generally?

There is no used copy.

There is no normal trade-in.

There is no conventional resale market.

And here's the part I think we're forgetting:

CONSUMER CHOICE ISN'T ABOUT WHAT YOU USE.

It's about preserving options for everyone.

Businesses serve customers with different priorities.

Some gamers want convenience.

Some want the cheapest price.

Some collect.

Some buy used.

Some trade games.

Some want physical shelves full of the games they've accumulated over decades.

Why shouldn't all of those customers have a place in PlayStation's future?

I'm not asking Sony to eliminate digital games.

Keep digital.

Keep physical.

Let them compete.

LET THE CUSTOMER DECIDE.

Because Sony shouldn't build the future of PlayStation only for the customers who don't care about resale, trade-ins, collecting or physical ownership.

It should build PlayStation for PLAYSTATION GAMERS.

All of us.

And for those who say they will never resell, then don’t be a hypocrite and never have a garage sale, a business, or sell your car. Just take it to the junkyard or give it to me free. I’ll sell it for you.
